And, unlike electronic health records systems (EHRs) that frequently presented new automation, implementing new ERP systems usually involves the challenge of replacing some degree of existing automation.

Congratulations to Ed Kopetsky, the 2018 CIO of the Year

Huntzinger congratulates Ed Kopetsky for being named the 2018 John E. Gall Jr. CIO of the Year. Kopetsky is the CIO of Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital Stanford and Stanford Children’s Health.

The award was announced January 7 by the College of Healthcare Information Management Executives (CHIME) and the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS). The award is given annually to a CIO who has shown significant leadership and commitment to the healthcare industry during his or her career. The recipient is selected jointly by the boards of CHIME and HIMSS.

While substance abuse has been a societal problem for generations, only in the last few decades has the problem become a crisis, largely precipitated through actions of the healthcare industry itself. A 1980 New England Journal of Medicine paper asserting that opiates are not inherently addictive led to aggressive industry efforts expanding their use in the treatment of pain. Patient pain scales were instituted, pain became viewed as the “fifth right,” and patient satisfaction surveys collected feedback on the provider’s treatment of pain.

I have more than 20 years of IT experience, 12 of which have been in senior management roles. While I have broad experience in IT, for the past seven years I have focused almost exclusively on ERP system assessments, selections, and implementations, with emphasis on financials, human capital management, supply chain management and business intelligence functionality.
